Regina Band Interview Series: Dragon
A musical Dragon lives in Regina?
Get ready for some fire breathing dragon action! Okay, maybe not. Alrighty, well, Dragon is actually a pretty sick Alternative Rock band from right here in Regina, Saskatchewan. While currently searching for a new guitarist and bassist, Joe Anderson (drums) and William Wenaus (composer, guitars, vocals, lyrics, bass, and English Masters student at the U of R) make up the band for now.
Wenaus was a nice enough soul to let me ask him some deeply difficult, brain busting questions…and he even answered them for me. Enjoy.
What first got you interested in music?
I think growing up watching music videos on Much Music/Much More Music. Watching bands rocks out–that made me want to be like them.
How did your band get into the music industry?
Ha! Well, we’re still working on that, I think.
What are your future goals as a band?
We’re in the process of putting together a professionally recorded EP. We’re also working on a press-kit. The plan is to get signed to a major label in the near future.
What is the meaning of life?
I’m so young, I have no clue.
What is your definition of true love?
Love is the greatest, but if you seek it in the wrongs ways, it brings so much pain and darkness into your life.
Do you prefer reading fiction or non-fiction books?
I’m doing my MA in English right now, so I read tons of fiction and poetry, but I also read lots of theory, philosophy, and history as well.
Which superhero do you look up to the most?
Spider-man.
If you could eliminate one of the 10 commandments out of the Bible, which one would you eliminate?
If I had to pick one…I think the whole “don’t you the Lord’s name in vain” is sorta not that important.
What are your greatest failures?
Hopefully not Dragon!
What are your greatest successes?
Hopefully Dragon!
Do you like cats?
Not really. Some cats I don’t mind, but others cats are just evil, weird, and annoying.
Who are your favourite sports teams?
I don’t have one, actually.
Which musicians inspire you the most?
Weezer, Radiohead, Oasis, Sloan, Silverchair, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Boston, The Darkness, Sum 41, Derek and the Dominoes…the list goes on.
Would you like your life to end with a fairytale ending or a tragic ending?
Definitely a fairy-tale ending so long as it’s not a fairy-tale where everyone dies at the end.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
When people call refers to things and situations as “random” and “awkward” when said things are neither! GRRR!!!
If you could go back in time historically and punch anybody you wanted to with no consequences, who would you punch?
When I look back on history I see so much violence, and I don’t want to be part of that, so I wouldn’t punch anyone.
What are your favourite ice cream flavours?
I can’t eat ice cream–I’m lactose-intolerant. My life is so tragic.
Why is the sky blue?
I think it has something to do with the way light scatters in the atmosphere…
What physical aspects of yourself are you most proud of?
Beats me. I have no idea.
What areas of life do you take the most pride in?
School and music.
Which historical event do you wish never happened?
So many of them. Not me, though, I’m glad I happened.
Now that we know Wenaus a little better, let’s help his band Dragon to win the “Rock Your Campus competition.” Dragon made it into the top 100 finalists already, but need our votes to move them into the top 10. Voting ends on Oct. 23 at midnight, so go to http://music.cbc.ca/#/artists/Dragon to listen to Dragon’s song “Nacho Cheez” and to vote. Help some brothers out.
