Students’ union organises another special general meeting within days post adjournment
In a recent email update, the University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU) announced
that its next special general meeting (SGM) will be held on Tuesday, October 21. The meeting
will be held remotely similar to its previous SGM which was held on Wednesday, September 24.
The last SGM had to be adjourned after students raised concerns including the not
receiving the link to join the meeting on time and having to wait in the digital lobby. Students
even called certain aspects of the meeting like keeping the names of the attendees anonymous
unlawful and demanded a physical ballot to be held. The meeting was eventually adjourned.
A new SGM has been announced rather soon after the previous adjournment. However,
despite the request for a physical ballot from the students, the SGM will be held remotely again.
The email update said that sole the purpose of this SGM will be to “consider and vote on
the special resolution for dissolution.” Those who registered to attend the previous SGM will
have their registration carried over the new meeting again and will have a spot for attendance and
the new members to register was shared which can also be found here.
Additionally, the email stated that voting will procced with the help of a “secret
electronic ballot,” and member can vote in favour of or against the dissolution or abstain entirely
from voting. In order for there to be a resolution to pass, at least two-thirds of the votes will have
to be yes.
Students from Luther and Campion Colleges will also be eligible to vote should they pre-
register. The only exception are students who are visiting students throught the English as a
Second Language (ESL) department.
If the resolution passes, URSU will be dissolved accordance with section 16 of the Non-
Profit Corporations Act, 2022 (Saskatchewan) and a liquidator will be appointed within 90 days
for a final wrap up.
Those who are interested in attending the SGM can pre-register by the end of until
Thursday, October 9.
