kim kaufman- community editor
Hey guys, gals, and non-binary pals! It’s another issue of Volume 67, and we’re shaking things up! We’ve mixed the sports and health section and the arts and culture section together to become the community section!
To contribute to your favourite newspaper, pick a pitch and shoot me an email at community@carillonregina.com! If you have your own idea for an article, give me a shout and we can see if it fits in the section. Let me know the topic of your article, and what ideas and message you are looking at covering in it!
Also, please let me know if you will have an image for your article, and whether it will be a half-page (550-750 words) or a full-page article (950-1,150 words). If you want help finding resources or brainstorming potential interview sources, I am more than happy to help out!

October, the gist
It’s October! The month of Thanksgiving and Halloween! What does October have in store for Regina and area this year?
For this article:
- Look into interesting, fun, and relaxing events in Regina throughout the month. Ideas include local art displays, free or cheap hobby classes, community activities and recreational sports put on by the City of Regina, and music or dance recitals and competitions.
Invitation to Treaty Talks
The MĂ©tis Nation invites MS Nation and Saskatchewan citizens to participate in the upcoming Treaty Talks to learn about the Made-In-Saskatchewan Treaty, ask questions, and share their thoughts. These talks will be occurring throughout Saskatchewan throughout October and November. See here for more information.
To write this article:
- Look into the event, the history, and the significance of this new Treaty. When and where are these talks taking place, how do people get involved, and who might be interested in participating?
Regina Live
Throughout the month, the Conexus Art Centre is going to be hosting concerts, shows, productions, and musicals! Isn’t that exciting!
- Look into the productions throughout the month at the Conexus Art Centre, and even all over the city! Maybe there is some local talent or big-name productions that people might want to check out!
Bill C-11
The Digital Media Association (DIMA) recently launched a campaign to keep streaming costs down in Canada after the Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11) came into effect.
Graham Davies, their President and CEO, claims the tax from the Act “undermines the role that streaming services have played in promoting Canadian culture and artists and enabling the music sector’s investment in talent.” Also, the tax is causing unnecessary financial strain on Canadians.
For this article:
- Look into the Online Streaming Act and what it’s all about. What brought about the Act, what is it intended to do, and why did DIMA responded to it with a campaign? Are there other organizations doing what DIMA is, or are others finding another way to handle the Act?
Interview with an artist (series)
Let’s bring attention to the local artists of Regina and area! Regina, as the capital of Saskatchewan, is full of culturally diverse people, and those who wish to show their culture in their passions! Dancers, musicians, artisans, and others bring cultural aspects into their art to represent who they are and where they come from.
For this article:
- Reach out to local artists to find out their inspiration for their art, how they represent their culture and themselves through their mediums, where their art has taken them (have they shown their art in competitions, galleries, been hired by the city or organizations to create art for them, and more!), and where they hope to go from here!
Kith + Kin Market
On October 5 and 6, the Kith + Kin market will be setting up shop in Regina. They boast local and small business wares from across Canada!
For this article:
- Attend the market and write a review of the experience. What sort of wares were there, and what was the turnout like? What is the purpose of hosting a market like this? Talk to those running the shops, and get a feel of what the event is all about. Maybe reach out to the organizers and see if you can chat about the market!
