Community Section
emma mcgill – community editor
Hi there, I’m Emma! As community editor, I’m proud to oversee this section filled with pieces about events happening locally, embracing the arts, and people coming together to make awesome things happen.
To contribute with us, pick a pitch from the list and send me an email at community@carillonregina.com. Your own ideas for stories are also very welcome. If you have one, send me an email detailing the topic of your article and the message you are hoping to get across in covering it.
Please also let me know if you will have an image to go with your article, and whether it will be a half-page (550-750 words) or a full-page (950-1,150 words) piece. If you want help finding resources or brainstorming potential interview sources, I am more than happy to assist!
What’s happening in April?
As finals come and go in the month of April and the semester comes to an end, people are always looking for ways to wind down and experience what Regina has to offer.
Take a look at what intriguing events are going on within the community and report back with some fun ideas for embracing springtime in Queen City.
Plato’s Closet opening
A brand new second-hand store, well-known and liked in many other cities, has just opened in Regina. To write this article, go check it out! See if you can find other people who’ve done some shopping there, and see what they think of the new addition! What other shops have set up business in Regina recently?
Student societies
Though some student societies are more loud and proud about what they get up to on campus, others keep more under the radar. It’s hard to know what exactly is out there, and what people can get involved in.
For this article, do some investigating as to what student societies are prominent on campus, what they get up to, and what they offer for the whole of the student body. To make things even more interesting, interview a few student society members.
Goodbye RFF
On March 11, it was announced that the 53rd annual Regina Folk Festival has been cancelled, according to their social media, due to “financial constraints and reduced operational capacity.” This is another piece of Regina art and music history that has recently taken a hit.
For this piece, look into the impact of Canada’s economic state of local art and music. Put a focalized spin on this story by seeking student opinion on the matter; ask students you meet around campus what the festival has meant to them and what they think about its cancellation.
Interview with an artist (series)
Let’s bring attention to the local artists of Regina and area! Regina, as the capital of Saskatchewan, is full of culturally diverse people, and those who wish to show their culture in their passions! Dancers, musicians, artisans, and others bring cultural aspects into their art to represent who they are and where they come from.
For this article:
- Reach out to local artists to find out their inspiration for their art, how they represent their culture and themselves through their mediums, where their art has taken them (have they shown their art in competitions, galleries, been hired by the city or organizations to create art for them, and more!), and where they hope to go from here.
