community pitches
Community Section
kim kaufman- community editor
Hey guys, gals, and non-binary pals! It’s another issue of Volume 67, and we’re shaking things up! We’ve mixed the sports and health section and the arts and culture section together to become the community section!
To contribute to your favourite newspaper, pick a pitch and shoot me an email at community@carillonregina.com! If you have your own idea for an article, give me a shout and we can see if it fits in the section. Let me know the topic of your article, and what ideas and message you are looking at covering in it!
Also, please let me know if you will have an image for your article, and whether it will be a half-page (550-750 words) or a full-page article (950-1,150 words). If you want help finding resources or brainstorming potential interview sources, I am more than happy to help out!

September, the gist (on hold)
On hold until October/November!
For this article:
- Look into interesting, fun, and relaxing events in Regina throughout the month. Ideas include local art displays, free or cheap hobby classes, community activities and recreational sports put on by the City of Regina, and music or dance recitals and competitions.
Campus updates
The U of R is making itself better! Rejoice! Or don’t, since people are upset with some of the directions the university is progressing. Some examples of newer developments include the Ad-Hum pit, the new Starbucks, and the new(ish) food vendors.
To write this article:
- Go around campus and interview students to find out what people are thinking about the new developments on campus. Are people generally pleased, upset, or excited about these new things? Based on the above answers, ask the student body what they would like to see the university invest in in the future.
Fantasy Food by Accenture
The Saskatchewan Science Centre in Regina is hosting its “Eras of inspiration” experience to celebrate its 35 years. At this event will be a fundraiser and tastings of local food and beverages.
For this article:
- Contact the organizers of this event to get the inside scoop. What can attendees expect? How has the Science Centre contributed to Regina’s rich history, and how has it changed over the years? Oh, and go ahead and look into what the Science Centre has to offer outside its delicious events.
Art for All
The Mackenzie Art Gallery frequently hosts new exhibitions and events, so let’s dive right on into the fresh paint. Modern art might seem boring, but maybe there’s some cool stuff mixed in just for the young folks!
For this article:
- Look into the Gallery’s up and coming events, such as an ASL interpreted tour of Whispers from the Vault and Studio Sunday Bones of a Story/Sticks to a Painting, and write some informational articles! Contact the Art Gallery to see if you can speak with them on the collections, maybe go to view the collections yourself, and write to your experience on how these events might just be worth checking out for those who usually do not go (the less art-enthused, etc).
Interview with an artist (series)
Let’s bring attention to the local artists of Regina and area! Regina, as the capital of Saskatchewan, is full of culturally diverse people, and those who wish to show their culture in their passions! Dancers, musicians, artisans, and others bring cultural aspects into their art to represent who they are and where they come from.
For this article:
- Reach out to local artists to find out their inspiration for their art, how they represent their culture and themselves through their mediums, where their art has taken them (have they shown their art in competitions, galleries, been hired by the city or organizations to create art for them, and more!), and where they hope to go from here!
Sunday’s Trivia and Tuesday’s Karaoke
Tommy’s Speakeatery on 2710 Montague St. hosts Trivia Nights and Karaoke nights on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively. Is this the first of its kind in Regina, or are these event nights at restaurants a hidden treasure people should be aware of?
For this article:
- Write an informative article about events like these, including where they are hosted in Regina and if there are other places people could go for group-oriented fun (think escape rooms, bingo nights, etc). Speak to the workers, find out who can go, how long it runs for, is it accessible for students/elderly/people interested in some later-night fun, and other important things to note like cost and what its all about.
