Arts & Sports Section
emma mcgill – arts & sports editor

Hi there, I’m Emma! As community editor, I’m proud to oversee this section filled with pieces about events happening locally, embracing the arts, and people coming together to make awesome things happen.

To contribute with us, pick a pitch from the list and send me an email at artsandsports@carillonregina.com. Your own ideas for stories are also very welcome. If you have one, send me an email detailing the topic of your article and the message you are hoping to get across in covering it.

Please also let me know if you will have an image to go with your article, and whether it will be a half-page (550-750 words) or a full-page (950-1,150 words) piece. If you want help finding resources or brainstorming potential interview sources, I am more than happy to assist!

What’s happening in January?

With a brand new year comes new opportunities for fun outings, engaging with the community, and making the best of a prairie winter. Do some snooping and see what’s going on around the city in January- what can people do before classes get too heavy?

Help get the word out!

Community fundraisers

Especially as a small city, Regina is known for its sense of community. People are always coming together across the city to help make things better for everyone, though sometimes their initiative needs some extra spotlight. Find a local fundraiser that may need that boost and tell us all about it!

Indigenous artist spotlight

Though there is much more work to be done than just adding a day to the calendar, Truth and Reconciliation day is an important reminder that giving everyone a voice is essential.

As we pass by this day, reach out to an Indigenous musician, visual artist, or creative of any kind to spotlight their work.

Cougars and Rams in action

As textbooks are dusted off and opened again, the university’s athletes have been training hard and looking forward to getting back in action. With so many athletes that are skilled in so many different sports and who are playing lots of games, there comes a lot of good interview and article material! Reach out to a Cougar or Ram and start a conversation, or go to a game and see what it’s all about.

Interview with an artist (series)

Let’s bring attention to the local artists of Regina and area! Regina, as the capital of Saskatchewan, is full of culturally diverse people, and those who wish to show their culture in their passions! Dancers, musicians, artisans, and others bring cultural aspects into their art to represent who they are and where they come from.

For this article:

  • Reach out to local artists to find out their inspiration for their art, how they represent their culture and themselves through their mediums, where their art has taken them (have they shown their art in competitions, galleries, been hired by the city or organizations to create art for them, and more!), and where they hope to go from here.
